Dear SAGE Friends,

I hope this note finds you all doing very well, as you begin selecting your SAGE World Cup representatives for 2012 in San Francisco. The purpose of this note is threefold.

First, I would like to remind you that the tenth annual SAGE World Cup will take place 27-30 July, 2012 in San Francisco, CA, USA. Each SAGE National Coordinator is invited to lead a delegation of youth (and their adult allies) to represent your country at this educational event. A tentative agenda is attached.

Second, I have attached a “Train the Trainers Entrepreneurship Workshop” Agenda for 30 July to 3 August. See your SAGE National Coordinator for the fee schedule to attend this four-day workshop.

The workshop will provide training for SAGE’s new entrepreneurship course, Turning Risk into Success.
At the workshop, we will provide everyone with the 3-ring binder containing the Teacher’s Manual, along with a CD containing an assessment exam, quizzes, PPTs for each lesson, and the PPT presentation for our sample business plan presentation.

Our goal is to make the SAGE World Cup program, and the subsequent workshop, available to all interested educators, civic and business leaders in a manner that fairly recognized each national coordinator for their effort while making the SAGE World Cup and workshop affordable for all of our guests.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
Curt DeBerg
SAGE Global CEO

The SAGE World Cup tournament will take place the last week of July, or sometime in the first two weeks of August, in…

Dear SAGE Friends Around the World,

As of today, we have 677 SAGEMAIL subscribers from 21 different countries. Subscribers include current SAGE students, SAGE alumni, teachers, policymakers, sponsors and business leaders. The purpose of this email is to provide a brief update from SAGE’s home office:

1. We are now up and running in 19 countries. Our newest countries are UAE and Burkina-Faso (Lansina To reports 12 high schools with SAGE teams). SAGE Philippines is now under new leadership, with Dr. Robert Galindez taking over the helm. Welcome, Robert!

2. I just returned from Nigeria, where the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, His Excellency Bala Mohammed, plans to build two new entrepreneurship centers in honor of SAGE. He is also going to encourage other members of the President Goodluck Jonathan’s cabinet to expand SAGE throughout the country. Thank you to Agwu Amogu, SAGE Africa coordinator, for the generous hospitality during my stay in Abuja, Nigeria.

3. The SAGE World Cup tournament will take place the last week of July, or sometime in the first two weeks of August, in…………..drum roll, please……………SAN FRANCISCO. Details to follow once they are known.

4. The SAGE USA tournament will take place on May 25-28 in the San Francisco Bay Area. We expect over 30 SAGE teams to compete.

5. The SAGEGLOBAL Board of Directors welcomes one new board member, Mr. Matt Enstice, from Buffalo, New York. He joins Ed Byers (Chair), Joe Pedott, Dr. Al Konuwa, and Van Ajemian on the board. Here is his biography:

Matt is President & CEO of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. He has been with the BNMC since its creation in 2001, when he assumed a leadership position. At the time, Matt was a consultant with Niagara Consulting Group, a Western New York firm with a focus on urban planning and healthcare. Before that, through his position with Niagara Falls Redevelopment LLC, Matt managed the Fixed Base Operations at the Niagara Falls International Airport, and oversaw the Niagara Falls Civic and Convention Center.

Prior to returning home to Buffalo in 1998, Matt worked in the entertainment industry, first in Los Angeles and then in New York City. He was a production assistant for Broadway Pictures, working on the movie Lassie, and a production coordinator with Saturday Night Live.
Matt holds a B.A. in English from Hobart College and a Master of Business Administration from Canisius College. He is currently active as a board and founding member of the South Buffalo Charter School, and serves on the boards of the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation, Amherst Chamber of Commerce and Elmwood Franklin School.

It is now OFFICIAL! We are pleased to announce that the 2011 SAGE World Cup will take place in...

Dear SAGE National Coordinators and Friends, (click for the brochure)

It is now OFFICIAL!

We are pleased to announce that the 2011 SAGE World Cup will take place in Buffalo/Niagara Falls from 22-26 July, 2011. The host will be Canisius College in Buffalo (http://www.canisius.edu). A brochure is attached with a general outline of the four-day schedule, along with a list of our sponsors.

As each country makes its plans to participate, please bear in mind that:

SAGE will pay all lodging, meals, cultural outing to Niagara Falls, gala award banquet, and ground transportation to and from the airport for EACH OFFICIAL SAGE TEAM DELEGATION starting the evening of 22 July, and ending after breakfast on the morning of 26 July.

An official SAGE TEAM DELEGATION consists of up to four people (e.g., three students and one adult ally).

Each country may choose to bring two delegations: an SRB champion team and an SEB champion team. In other words, SAGE will pay for a total of eight people per country, if they bring one SRB team and one SEB team. If they bring only one team, SAGE will pay for up to four people maximum.

SAGE will pay all lodging, meals, cultural outing to Niagara Falls, and gala award banquet for each the SAGE Continental Coordinators and National Coordinators, starting the evening of 22 July, and ending after breakfast on the morning of 26 July.

We encourage countries to bring larger delegations, bearing in mind that any delegate/guest who is not part of the official delegation of four people (e.g., an “overflow” delegate) must pay a fixed fee of $500 per person prior to checking into their sleeping rooms (there will be no pro rations per day). This fee will pay for all, meals, cultural outing to Niagara Falls, gala award banquet and ground transport to and from the airport.

To help you secure visas, SAGE Global will author one generic letter per delegation inviting your country to participate.

The SAGE Global home office would like to thank Peter Eimer, SAGE North America Continental Coordinator, for helping us to secure the venue for this year’s event. We would also like to thank Canisius College, along with the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce, for agreeing to host what promises to be a most spectacular event!

Have a great day/evening.

Sincerely,

Competition presenters should write their own parts of the presentation so they are very familiar with the contents...

Competition presenters should write their own parts of the presentation so they are very familiar with the contents. Visual documentation should accompany the oral presentation. Presentations vary, with teams using slide projectors, video monitors, or computer presentations for visual documentation. You may want to ask the college mentors, your BAB, or your speech and drama teachers at your school to critique your presentation and make suggestions for improvement. Presentation team members need to be familiar with EVERY activity.

For non-English speaking SAGE teams advancing to the SAGE World Cup, we urge you to speak in your native language if you do not speak American English with an American accent. If you choose to use your native language, we will allow as much time as needed in order for your interpreter to translate your verbal presentation into English.

Presentation Details

Each SAGE team will be given a 35-minute time block at the competition. During the first 10 minutes teams will immediately display their annual reports on the computer projection screen. While the judges are reading the annual reports, the team will set up its equipment, set up props, etc. The team will then have 13 minutes to give their oral/audio-visual presentation, followed by a 7-minute mandatory question and answer period. Finally, in the last 5 minutes, students will remove all their equipment and exit the room while the judges score the team.

Anyone may assist the team with set up or operation of AV equipment. However, only the student team members may participate in the presentation or answer questions from the judges.

While we encourage SAGE teams to demonstrate their products during the presentation, teams should be careful not to use harmful ingredients or techniques that may create problems with the conference venue. If the presentation materials appear to be in violation of this rule, in the opinion of the league coordinator, the team will be banned from using such ingredients or techniques.

Presentation Equipment Provided by the SAGE Host

one large screen and two extension cords

a visual projection system compatible with PCs (not MACs)

Every effort will be made by the host university to supply the proper computer equipment, but it is a wise idea to bring your own laptop and visual projection system to be on the safe side.

Practice time in practice rooms

Every effort will be made by the SAGE tournament host to allow SAGE teams to practice time in designated practice rooms. Teams should be respectful of other teams, and only remain in the room for 15 minute periods unless no other teams are waiting.

General Information

Except for the annual report (and media, if any), no handouts to judges are permitted. However, teams may display products by holding them up during and after the oral presentation.

If you are using PowerPoint or other presentation software, please save your presentation on a zip disk and/or CD, to be loaded onto the computer in the presentation room. Make sure your presentation file is PC compatible (not Macintosh).

Members of local TV, radio, or newspaper media have full access to all presentation rooms at any time. All teams should be prepared for the possibility of the media taking video or photos of their presentation.

The written report is the first impression the judges get of your year’s work. Make your report easy to follow by clearly identifying sections with the corresponding judging criteria. Samples of annual reports can be downloaded by going to http://sageglobal.org.

Please make sure the report is written in ENGLISH. Suggestion: make sure someone who is very fluent in English proofreads and edits your report. A SAGE consultant or mentor available by e-mail can tell you whether your report would need editing, after which somebody at your school or in your community would proofread.

Written annual reports are limited to a total of four (4) printed pages on 8 ½ by 11 paper (or two pages front to back). If your team uses a cover or back page it will count as one of those four pages.

You may also attach copies of any newspaper coverage, and other evidence of media attention, of your activities. It would be helpful for the growth and prestige of our organization if SAGE is mentioned in the article. You may also attach sample newsletters and photos of billboards, etc. Also, presenters may distribute their personal business cards.

Teams may NOT distribute copies of business plans or letters of commendation. Violation of this rule will result in an automatic 5-point deduction from the total of 40 points available for the written annual report.

Your team should bring 40 copies of your team’s annual report to be handed out to the SAGE judges.

During the ten minute setup period, we urge your team to display the annual report on the computer projection screen, one page at a time, so that judges and other audience members can see the report.

Hi, Curt . . .

Please see the appendices to the attached White Paper issued last month by the Social Enterprise Alliance (I’m the principal author, but collaborated with Lisa Nitze, the new SEA President/CEO, and Corinne Gray, a former student of mine who is now a full-time employee at SEA and did much of the research behind the White Paper).

Note the first three appendices: They include 39 examples of successful SEBs located in the U.S.

I have also attached a PowerPoint displaying information about more than 25 successful SEBs based in countries other than the U.S.

These should provide a wealth of examples to include in the handbook and on the website so that high school students can get a better idea of what we mean by SEBs.

Take care,

JERR
